Non-prescription FDA-Approved Diet Aid, Has “Problems”?

The first non-prescription diet aid approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration still has not performed as expected. The active ingredient of Alli, by GlaxoSmithKline, is Orlistat but it has half of the dose as compared to Xenical which is being manufactured by Roche Holdings.

As with Xenical, Alli prevents the absorption of fat in the intestines. The problem with this way of blocking the fat from food is that fat tends to pass through the intestines unexpectedly. There are lot of “situations” wherein users of the drug have had experiences leading to embarrassment for users.

To remedy this problem, both manufacturers have both issued warnings or contraindications about consumption of fatty food with the pills. In the case of Alli, the pill is being marketed with a kit that includes a healthy eating guide, food journal and calorie guide. The 60-pill kit retails at about $50 while the 90-pill pack retails at about $ 60. That translates, according to company representatives’ estimates, as $1.5 billion US dollars in annual projected earnings for Alli alone.

This might be good way to start for anyone (including myself) wanting to lose weight for fat contains 9 calories a gram compared to 4 calories a gram of protein or carbohydrates.

But I would really opt for the “smarter” way of doing losing weight. That is by eating right, having enough shut-eye, and effective stress management; that is, in my case, fitting exercise in my schedule. There are a lot of good and effective supplements out there too that would definitely work like green tea or green tea extracts.

I would not want to risk an “embarrasing situation” (if I took those diet pills) to spoil a date, business meeting or make me want to turn my back on my newly-formed good habits.

Cholesterol Drugs for Kids?

Children, as young as 8 years old, who are overweight are urged to have their cholesterol levels checked. This comes after the latest (July 07, 2008) American Academy of Pediatrics statement to see if these overweight children are already developing heart disease.

The test that is recommended is the fasting lipid profile where the measure of HDL (good cholesterol) and LDL (bad cholesterol) of an overweight child is known. It is definitely recommended to kids who are overweight or obese who have a family history of diabetes or high blood pressure. It is for overweight children with no known family history of the diseases mentioned.

Those overweight children who are found to be at greatest risk for cardiovascular (heart and blood vessels) problems may be prescribed treatment. This comes in the wake of the alarming statistics of the incidence of childhood obesity in the United States with 30 percent of American children in the obese category.

Doctors and researchers from the Academy of Pediatrics were quick to point out that a low-fat diet, regular exercise and other lifestyle modifications might be what the overweight or obese children only need to have their blood cholesterol levels be in normal or manageable levels. Those at greatest risk for the development of heart disease in their childhood may have to take cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins) in addition to lifestyle modification that have been prescribed by their respective pediatricians.

This is a sad development for children in America and in nations that have seen those overweight and obese on the rise. Sedentary lifestyles have seen even children having to take cholesterol-lower drugs of their elders.

It is not too late for kids to develop healthy habits now so that they may live more healthy and productive lives in the future.

About infomercial workout machines…Review

Another great day for me, I jogged this morning, had my breakfast earlier of whole grain cereal sprinkled with raisins (for fiber and natural vitamins), and turned on the TV. Hmmm, its a perfect lazy Sunday for me. Whoa! Yet another tv commercial about an “ab machine” for that stubborn abdominal fat (yeah I have ’em, really stubborn). The ‘ new’ contraption I’m talking about here is the ‘Bean’, looks like a foot stool without the legs.

Before I ‘drift away’, I have also done some research on various fitness magazines, fitness professional sites and even doctor’s blogs. What I have come upon is this: There is not one exercise, routine or ‘machine’ that will make your abs have that ‘six-pack’ look. Again, not one exercise, routine or machine will make your abs have that ‘six pack’ look.

Here are some of what I have compiled so far about total body fitness:

· Six-pack abs or trim abdominal areas are a result of smart fitness training. If you are overweight like me, we are never going to get them by just exercising our abdominal area alone and expecting results “in just minutes a day”.

· You really have to invest time and energy (not necessarily lots of money) to reach your fitness goals. For me it is for prevention of serious diseases (high blood pressure and heart attacks, for starters) and I have begun to appreciate the early morning sun and being able to run or jog while others are just rolling around their beds and ‘dreading’ the brand new day.

· It is really an illusion that there is one way of getting fit. The best ones that work and have a higher success rate are those programs that can be easily fit in your daily routine. As is always the case, changing some of what you are used too feels tedious or ‘hard’ at the start. But, once you get the hang of it, you will really see and feel results.

· The marketers of these products ‘prey’ upon us who don’t have enough time to do research (there are a lot of free and sensible tips on the Internet) and too ‘busy’ for exercise. I have read success stories on losing weight the sensible way, they incorporated taking health supplements, get serious with daily exercise (that fit their fitness levels), and healthy lifestyle changes in their daily lives. Again, your slimmer hips, waist or six pack abs won’t happen ‘overnight’.

What we really need to exercise, before thinking of buying any machine or starting a fitness program, online or offline, is caution. Reading the fine print and consulting a qualified doctor and fitness professional to get in you in the ‘proper gear’. You will never get fit with “3 payments of $29.95 plus shipping and handling”.

Taking Calcium Supplements? Read This…

The choices of calcium supplements can be a daunting task. When we look at the brand, we are really looking at the bottle and the choice of pictures and words that the brand conveys to us, while shopping for other things at the same time. Few of us realize that there are several different calcium compounds that are popular and available over the counter.

Here are the three compounds:

1. Calcium Carbonate

2. Calcium Gluconate

3. Calcium Citrate

We have to look at the three choices and understand that, although we are seeing “Calcium” in each form, the terms “Carbonate”, “Gluconate”, and “Citrate” are key words to consider when picking these supplements.

Like other essential minerals, calcium needs to be bonded to other compounds so it is easily absorbed into the body. The term for this is: ‘bioavailability’.

Calcium Carbonate:

Calcium carbonate is a naturally-occurring compound, found in rocks, the bones of mammals, and dairy products. This compound is synthesized in a lab for calcium supplements to assure purity. Calcium carbonate has other uses such as well. It is used for inactive fillers for drug tablets. Powders and capsules and as part of popular antacid formulations.

Calcium Gluconate:

Calcium gluconate, on the other hand, is another for m of calcium that is used to treat hypocalcaemia, or low calcium levels in the blood. This compound has 9.3% bioavalable calcium in its purest form. As with calcium carbonate, it is used as a supplement for treatment of osteoporosis and osteomalacia (‘brittle bone’ disease, which is also brought on by Vitamin D deficiency).

Calcium Citrate:

Calcium citrate is commonly used as a food additive. It can be seen, as well, as ‘E333’ on some food ingredient declarations. It is also used as a ‘water softener’ to remove excess metal ions in drinking water (to make it taste better).

The bioavailability of Calcium Citrate is 2.5 times that of calcium carbonate. Patients that have undergone gastric bypass surgery (Roux-en-Y) or weight-loss surgery are usually instructed to take Calcium citrate.

There are 5 forms of Calcium compound:

1. Calcium Carbonate,

2. Calcium Citrate,

3. Calcium Gluconate,

4. Calcium Phosphate,

5. Calcium Lactate

We won’t go into all the uses of the Calcium Phosphate or Calcium Lactate here, it’s just for reference. Staying informed about what supplements are available, and why one may take them is important. Calcium or the lack of it affects the body directly.

For example:

Most of us are acquainted with the fact that Calcium is a part of our bone and teeth make-up, but Calcium plays many other vital roles in our bodies. Did you know that, if our bodies don’t get enough Calcium intake, that it will demineralize bone to maintain normal blood calcium levels?

Calcium mediates the constriction and relaxation of blood vessels (vasoconstriction and vasodilation), nerve impulse transmission and muscle contraction. It also secrets hormones like insulin 3. This has further reaching impacts into the nerve structure.

Calcium plays a vital role in the body, throughout a person’s lifespan, and is necessary to keep the proper levels up to assure proper body function. Supplements help to shore up the loss of calcium in our diets, especially when many have milk allergies and have to resort to soy or rice milk. It is always good to check with your physician about taking supplements. If you run into a Physician that does not recommend any supplements, you should seek another opinion. Many Physicians are reading the medical journals and seeing the health benefits that supplements carry today, and although it takes them time to study this area, those that have the experience in this area can be a fantastic help.
